Santiago Remains at Top of Spain's Tourist Sector
In August, Compostela was the third Spanish city with the highest hotel occupation rate.

According to Santiago’s Tourism councillor, Xosé Manuel Iglesias, the tourist data corresponding to July and August shows that Santiago remains at the top of Spain’s tourist sector. On the other hand, average tourist expenditure decreased, as did the number of international tourists. Iglesias therefore highlighted the importance of guaranteeing Santiago’s international flights, as well as increasing the number of destinations in the short and medium term.
In the month of July, Santiago received 126,211 overnight stays, a 7.67% increase compared to last year. This data contrasts with the 5.5% decrease in Spain and the 1.06% decrease in Galicia as a whole. The increase in Santiago was due to a large increase (15.43%) in Spanish tourists, while the number of international tourists decreased by 4.31%. Santiago was the fifth city with the largest growth among World Heritage and Green Spain cities. The cities that increased more than Santiago were Cáceres (13.37%), Vitoria (13.18%), A Coruña (10.41%) and Oviedo (9.13%). In the month of August, Santiago with the third Spanish city with the largest hotel occupation rate, according to Ocupatur. Santiago enjoyed an average occupation rate of 75%, compared to the Spanish average of 61%. The only cities with higher rates were Barcelona (80%) and Malaga (76%).
Santiago and Bilbao, with 1.87%, are the only cities with growth during the first seven months of the year among the World Heritage Cities and Green Spain cities, according to the following data: Vitoria, -2,03%; San Sebastián, -3,27%; Gijón, -13,26%; Oviedo, -9,57%; Santander, -1,40%; Ávila, -14,28%; Cáceres, -3,51%; Córdoba, -9,35%; Cuenca, -11,53%; Salamanca, -4,57%; Segovia, -8,04%; Toledo, -6,46%; A Coruña, -11,24% and Vigo -13,03%.
