Variegated scallop marinated with caipiriña. A skewer of cuttlefish in algae mayonnaise. Pork dewlap with small Norway lobsters. Toasted bread with octopus and Arzúa cheese. Cod in red-onion sauce. Monkfish and almonds. Razor clam and pistachios... This summer sees the return of enjoying tapas in Santiago de Compostela: Santiago Tourism and the Compostela Catering Association are once again hosting the SANTIAGO(é)TAPAS competition, so that lovers of small-scale cuisine can explore five routes and up to 50 bars to vote for their favourite tapa. During this adventure to sample the city´s best 108 tapas, Compostela locals and visitors will be accompanied by their faithful Tapasporte, which will be stamped by the different tapas bars during this culinary `pilgrimage´. Apart from the tourist and gastronomy rewards, there will also be prizes for the best participants. More info about routes, participating establishments, recipes and prizes can be found on the web http://www.santiagoetapas.com/.
What are (é)tapas? The SANTIAGO(é)TAPAS is a Santiago Tourism initiative to promote the city´s food and wine tourism. The first competition in 2008 featured 45 establishments and 113 recipes. During 16 days, close to 20,000 tapas were eaten, 6,000 Tapasportes were handed out and 267 prizes were awarded to the best tapas-eaters. The second year is aimed at consolidating the event as one of the Galician capital´s tourist attractions. It once again features a map with five routes, 50 registered bars, 109 competing tapas, voting by the public, by a jury and the possibility of wining numerous prizes by getting your Tapasporte stamped from bar to bar. How will the public vote? After eating a tapa, and getting their Tapasporte stamped, the public can evaluate the tapa by using the competition beer-mat to vote and placing it in a ballet box inside the bar.
The public´s opinion will be the basis for awarding two prizes: Tapa of the Public 09 for the tapa with the most votes by clients, and (é)xcelente 09 for the bar most highly valued for its service and atmosphere. There will be a prize draw among all those filling in beer-mats for Air Berlin tickets to any of their European destinations from Spain. The jury´s prizes While the public is sampling tapas throughout the city, a specialised jury made up of chefs, bar owners, journalists, gastronomy bloggers and food quality experts will visit bars without revealing their identity in order to evaluate the competing tapas. Their verdict will decide who gets the Best Tapa prize (the absolute winner), the Traditional Tapa prize (inspired by Galicia´s gastronomy tradition), the Creative Tapa prize (the most innovative), the Estrella Galicia 09 prize (best combination with beer) and the Galicia Calidade 09 prize for the tapa that best features quality Galician produce. SANTIAGO(é)TAPAS, an initiative of the municipal Economic Promotion and Tourism Department and the Compostela Catering Association, features the private sponsorship of Estrella Galicia, the institutional sponsorship of Galicia Calidade and the special collaboration of the Praza de Abastos food market and the El Corrego Gallego group.
